Boats for demanding use, since 1973
The history of TG goes back five decades. Our story began in the outskirts of Porvoo, a small town situated in the south of Finland, in the early 1970s, when the company, which at that time went under the name TG-Marin, began serial production of fiberglass racing boats. Pretty quickly the company however started focusing on cabin-equipped leisure boats. Throughout its history, the company’s goal has been to design and manufacture increasingly better and higher quality boats for nordic conditions.
TG runs in the family
TG-Marin was founded by Tage Gustafson from Porvoo, who expanded operations from racing to leisure boats in the late 1970s. In 1973 TG launched its first serial production boat, the TG-Special. TG-Special was a racing boat out of fiberglass that won numerous Finnish and Nordic Championships during the years. The first leisure boat, TG-Marin 19 Cabin, was launched in 1979, closely followed by its sister model, the TG-Marin 19 Fishing. The Fishing model was the first TG with an aft cabin. Following this the company specialised in the production of aft and mid cabin boats, switching focus from racing to cabin boats in the mid-1980s.
The end of the 80’s was an eventful period in TG’s history. As production grew, the production facilities and showroom moved to new premises in 1987. About a year later, the TG-7000, which was the first TG model to break through commercially, was released. In 1989 Tage decided to sell TG-Marin, but not before he and his brother Kim had founded TG-Boat Oy, a company that focused solely on boat production. The brothers acquired the TG boat moulds and manufacturing rights, and continued developing cabin boats suited for our harsh Nordic conditions. Boat and boat engine sales was left to the new owners of TG-Marin. In the 1990s TG released i.e. the mid-cabin boats TG-5000 and TG-6000, and surprisingly enough even a few open boat models.
In 2006 the company went through a generation-shift, as Tage’s and Kim’s half-brother Jan Gustafson and Tage’s son Fredrik “Frese” Gustafson founded Freja Marine Oy and took over both design and production of the TG boats. As the result of an almost 3-year-long product development process Freja Marine launched the TG-Alfa cabin boat in 2009, a boat model whose well thought-out details and devotionally designed features yielded great results: the TG-Alfa was elected the boat of the year at the Helsinki Boat Show in February 2009. TG-Alfa led the way for TG’s modern model range that nowadays consists of four different cabin boats.
Quality with more than 50 years of experience
As of late 2021 TG belongs to the family owned Otto Brandt Group, but the boats are still manufactures at Freja Marine’s premises in Porvoo. The Otto Brandt Group, that dates back to 1905, has a solid experience in both leisure vehicles, boat engines and boat manufacture, due to the several Finnish boat factories that belong to the group. As the result of the change of ownership TG has an even greater opportunity to reach both nordic and northern european markets. That being said, we still today cherish the the unique TG dna, as both Jan and Frese are still actively involved in the manufacture and design processes. TG’s design and manufacture is still led by the same principles that drove TG’s success in previous decades: we manufacture our boats from the best materials, with uncompromising professionalism and the end user’s best interests on top of mind.
More than 50 years of experience in boatbuilding and year-round arhipelago living gives us exceptional insight into what nordic boating conditions require and a deep understanding of what boaters demand of their boats here in northern europe. The basic TG features always include easy drivability, absolute safety and excellent performance. Our desire is to build boats that make your sea journeys as smooth as possible in any weather – no matter if you use your boat for commuting or cruising.
